People still smoke, no matter what the cancer experts tell us. And the Native American stores have always sold cigarettes without charging taxes. However, because of our current severe recession the State of New York has bullied their way into the livlihood of two tribal nations in that tax stressed state.

On the heels of a federal court order Tuesday, a state appellate judge has ordered the state not to collect the $4.35 per pack tax that went into effect Wednesday. The Seneca and Cayuga nations have argued the fee violates their sovereign rights and will damage their economies. Governor David Paterson says the cash-strapped state needs the $200 million the tax is expected to generate. The tax was originally passed as part of an emergency spending plan in June, according to NY 1.

Here we go again, the government getting in the way of the small businessman.  But, thanks to a Federal Appellete Judge the Native Americans have won this round.

Concerns over Israeli access to BlackBerry data, and the use of the device by the United States to spy on the United Arab Emirates are behind the Gulf state’s moves to curb the smartphone, Dubai’s police chief said.

“The Unites States is the primary beneficiary of having no controls over the BlackBerry, as it has an interest to spy on the UAE,” Dhahi Khalfan Tamim said in remarks carried by the website of the daily al-Khaleej on Friday.

“The West has accused us of curbing the liberties of BlackBerry users, while America, Israel, Britain and other countries are allowed access to all transferred data,” Tamim added.

Tamim, who has been outspoken in blaming Israeli agents for the assassination of a top Palestinian militant at a Dubai hotel in January, did not say why Washington had an interest in spying on Western-allied UAE.

The UAE, where BlackBerry maker RIM has 500,000 users, has said it would suspend BlackBerry Messenger, email and Web browser services from October11 until the government could get access to encrypted messages.

Ascension has a population of about 1,250 (mostly Saints) and is a communications centre (BBC and Cable and Wireless) in addition to the RAF and USAF presence. A resident island manager or administrator nominally governs Ascension, although in reality the island is run (and operating costs paid for) by its users.

Ascension has an airstrip although there are no commercial flights to Ascension; RAF flights from Brize Norton to the Falklands stop at Ascension, and USAF flights from Patrick AFB (Florida) serve the US Base on the island. Ascension used to be a “closed” island but tourist access has recently become available, although there are relatively few facilities for tourists or casual visitors. Ascension can be briefly visited as a passenger on the Royal Mail Ship (RMS) St. Helena when it calls at the island.

The Islander weekly newspaper is available online.

(Rick Herrick, second from left, Cathy Herrick second from right, with family members)

His name is Rick Herrick, 53.  He owns and operates KBHR FM Radio in Big Bear Lake, California, a year-round resort.

Before coming to the mountains Herrick worked for ABC Radio Network in Hollywood.  He later moved on to KBIG FM Radio in 1994 as a Senior Account Executive.

Soon Rick met Cathy and they were married.  The pair decided to move out of the big city and up into the clean air of Big Bear Lake in 1995.  Rick and Cathy had plans. After a short while they opened the mountain area’s first radio station. The station’s offices were soon opened in the Big Bear City Airport building. The format was and still is pop music, mixed with the latest news and lots of public service.  Their website (www.kbhr933.com) is a another key location for KBHR FM’s news and public service in “Bear Valley.”

After a few years Rick became a Planning Commission member. He later was elected into the Big Bear City Council. Voters liked his style of fairness and strong leadership. Later Rick was elected Mayor of Big Bear Lake by the council members where he served for two terms.

Now Herrick is enthusiastically running for re-election this coming November 2nd.  His popularity and quiet commitment is attractive to a majority of voters. And today, 1 September 2010 friends and interested citizens got together and held an outdoor buffet for him.  The gathering was sponsored by the Committee to Re-Elect Rick Herrick.

This is the American way. And all over America gatherings just like this are being held for candidates running for office. Let’s hope your favorite candidates win in November.
