Day Tripin’ in Anchorage, Alaska . . .
By
A day or two spent in the downtown of Alaska’s largest city is a trip into an eclectic mix of the bustle of Seattle, an upscale Tijuana market place and frontier gold rush America.
As you wander along 4th Street you can find a hardy welcome by Big Al doing his Louisiana Hot Dog “thing” from the sidewalk in front of his restaurant in rain, shine or snow . . . tourist trinket shops with “genuwine” Alaska memorabilia for a few dollars to stores selling clothing made from wild fur for $50,000 and beyond.
There are cultural events along the way . . . the Alaskan Native Arts Foundation, the world class Anchorage Museum, the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, Cyrano’s Theater Company and other events.

As one moves along the street you get a feel of the international flavor of the city . . . one hears Japanese, Norwegian, German, French, Spanish, local Inuit and Yup’ik with English mashing it all together.
Enjoy the feel of a Parisian al fresco street scene from a sunshine drenched extension of one of the street’s bistros . . . people watching . . . a couple with backpacks and “brush clothes” that look as if they just came walking in from the back country . . . others dressed in “Hip-Hop” . . . a group in matching tour t-shirts taking pictures of you for their “American Street Scene #87”toput in their albums at home in Tokyo. . . . just plain folks, weirdoes and geeks that would be found in any city scene in America. This entire conglomeration mixes and mingles freely during the day and on into the evening activities.
You can always stop by the Anchorage Convention and Visitor’s Center for a “feel” of pioneer Alaska and obtain ideas of things to do and see by the hand full.
On one corner, surrounded by beautiful Alaskan summer flowers with a thick layer of grass “insulation” on the roof of is the old log home that reminds you that it is not always August in Anchorage.

Across the street you find the Visitor’s Center in the old Federal building. This is more of a free museum of Alaska’s wild life where you can almost touch a polar bear or hear the wild call of the lonely wolf.
Carriage rides bring an incongruous touch of the “old South” to the “frozen North” . . . a bit out of time and place perhaps, but a fun summer excursion for the family anyway.
